Nursery to P1
For transition from Nursery to P1, pupils usually come for familiarisation visits throughout the summer term to join in different activities e.g. attend an assembly, have an outdoor play session in the playground, visit for a storytime in the classroom. Parents/carers of new P1 pupils are invited to attend an induction evening in June.
Information can be found on the Information Section of this website and on the website below. The transition book used by all the Nurseries and Early Years Centres in Edinburgh for this year (for Aug23) will be ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’.
To welcome you to P1 at Parsons Green, we have made a special tour of a P1 classroom. This was made during the covid pandemic but gives an idea of a P1 classroom: Click here to see our special 360 degree photograph. When you look round this photograph, you can click on the white hotspots to watch short information videos.
Transition within the school from year to year
For transition for other year groups, children have the opportunity to ‘Meet the Teacher’ before the end of term and become familiar with the location of their new classroom, toilets and cloakroom areas.
Throughout the school positive relationships are the foundation for building our learning community and supporting successful transitions. Pupils in P1 and P2 are buddied with pupils in P6 and P7. Pupils from P5-7 may apply to become Parsy Pals, a coveted role in the playground supporting the younger children. Leadership Groups organised vertically around themes of sustainability support pupils to work together with those from other classes. These opportunities all help pupils to become confident individuals as they build rapport with peers and adults and support them to make successful transitions. The Building Resilience Programme and Zones of Regulation as part of our Health and Wellbeing curriculum also support children with strategies to cope with transitions.
Leaving Our School (all stages except P7)
Please complete and return this form to our school office if your child is leaving the school for any reason before P7:
P7 to S1
For pupils in P7 making the transition to S1 at Portobello High School, it is an automatic process if you are in the catchment area. You may decide to choose the local Catholic High School, Holy Rood HS.
The pupils begin the transition process from P6 making visits to PHS for curricular learning opportunities e.g. The Pizza Challenge for P6, Rights/ STEM based workshops in P7, the 3 day visit at the end of P7. Our P7 pupils also attend residential camp for a week which is an excellent preparation for increasing independence.

P7 Transition Project-My Life, My Choices
Provision is made for pupils who require ‘enhanced’ transition e.g. a little more time, an extra visit, a social story or a child planning meeting to support the changes.
