Learning for Sustainability

Global Link with Matabi Primary in MalawiP1100709

We are in the process of establishing a new school link with a school in Malawi through the Scotland-Malawi Partnership.

RRSA – Rights Respecting Schools Award

Parsons Green is on the journey towards becoming a Unicef Rights Respecting School. This involves learning about the UNCRC (United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child) and what that means for ourselves and each other.

In March 2020 we successfully achieved the Silver Level of the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award – Rights Aware and are working on re-accrediting at Silver before moving onto Gold.  The Knights of Rights is our pupil group leading this initiative but it involves us all! Each class has a class charter around the Articles from the UNCRC. The Articles are regularly used in Assemblies and linked to our learning and wider life.

During 2019-20 we have had a particular focus on Article 31, the right to play supported by the Parent Council who have helped us install new play equipment that was kindly donated from the Modern Art Gallery. The whole school participates in the Global Day of Play every February. The Parent Council are actively supporting developments to the school grounds during 25-26.

We have a curriculum programme that covers the Sustainable Development Goals and the UNCRC articles following a rolling 3 year programme. This involves learning together in assemblies and in class time to deepen our knowledge and understanding of what it means for the children to be Rights Bearers and the adults to be Duty Holders.

Eco Schools Scotland Info

We  are working towards our Green Flag Award with the children across the school engaging in a variety of different activities. This ranges from developing biodiversity within the Wildlife Garden, to recycling our paper waste and reducing food waste, to litter picking and thinking how we can all do our bit for the planet. We are looking at the Sustainability Goals.

For the 24-25 school year, all our Leadership Groups are focused on the Eco Schools groups, taking base-lines and showing how we can make a difference. This is continued in 25-26 with One Planet and other leadership groups.

We have seen a big impact following upgrades to the heating system (phase 1 completed 22-23), solar panels, windows and increased insulation to the school (phase 2 completed 24-25).

1 in 5 Project

We have been actively looking for ways to reduce the cost of the school day and would encourage all parents and carers to bring and take from the pre-loved uniform rails. These rails also house jackets, PE kits, and at relevant times of the year, Hallowe’en costumes and Christmas outfits. We welcome wellies and outdoor clothing for P7 residential camp and can always find a home for clothes in good condition.

We have a bring and swap book box and food-bank at the front entrance, please help yourself!

If families need a referral to a Food Bank in the area, please get in touch with the HT, DHT or school office staff, to make an appointment, in confidence. We are able to refer families directly.

If any family is experiencing financial difficulties, for whatever reason, please get in touch. We can refer or signpost to services and agencies who may be able to help. (UNCRC Article 27 – the right to a decent standard of living)
