What is the UNCRC?

Rights help us learn, have fun and treat everybody equally. You have rights the day you’re born and they can’t be taken away from you. Rights are for all children and they don’t have to be earned.

 

 

 

 

What are rights?

 

Parent Information

Everybody has rights, including children. But what are children’s rights and how can we as parents and carers help support them?

Rights make sure we’re all treated fairly and can reach our full potential. Children have additional rights to adults. This is because children need extra protection and don’t have the independence adults do.

As a parent, carer or family member, it’s up to us to speak up for our children and make sure their rights are being met. We do this every day, even when we don’t know it. For example when you ask a teacher to provide extra help for your child at school or when you chase up a medical appointment for your child.

These rights are set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This is an internationally agreed document that recognises the importance of children’s rights and freedoms and always puts the best interests of the child first.

The UNCRC isn’t an additional ask or something to give you more to do. Nor does it mean your child can do whatever they want whenever they want! It provides you with the language to support your child whether at school, the doctors or anywhere else.

Duty Bearers and Rights Holders

Rights holders are all children at Parsons Green who have equal rights. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) applies to all children and they are Rights Holders.

Duty Bearers are people over 18 in our school community that work with children and help us enjoy our rights and make sure our rights are respected.

 

Class Charters

A class charter is something that helps us learn, keeps us safe and helps us know our rights. We all have one in our classrooms and follow it all the time.

LEADERSHIP GROUPS

At Parsons Green, we take part in Leadership Groups that help us share our voices, have our opinions heard and make a difference to our school and world. Each group is responsible for a local or global issue. Our Leadership groups include: Parsy Reps (Pupil Council), Knights of Rights (our Rights Respecting Steering Group), Global group, Equalities, Digital Leaders, Healthy Schools, Wellbeing, JRSO, Gardening, Sustainability, Eco and Play.
